This week was good here I think the highlight possibly was the
train ride back from zone training. We ended up in a compartment with a
man and three women that were returning to Białystok from a work seminar
in Warsaw. We got to small talking with them and it was not long before
they started asking about out religion. We were able to explain a lot
of what we believe (it was a nearly 4-hour train ride). The questions
kept coming and we were able to clarify them and to testify of the
gospel and all of us in that compartment became what I would consider
"friends". What was interesting to me was that after a wonderful
discussion, they were not willing to do so much as to take an ulotka
from us. They said that they would not use it. I was slightly thrown
back, why would they not just take a simple pass-along card from their
new acquaintances? Then I realized, we did everything we were expected
to do. We gave them the key information, we showed love, kindness,
consideration, we also left them with a choice to accept or decline. As
we so often find, in this mission, and across the world, agency is key
in the gospel plan.<br />
<br />It was nice to know that we had done all we could and should have done.<br /></div>
It
is crazy how fast time has flown and now I am 2 months and some change
from home. I am stoked for that, but sad that I will be finishing my
work as a full-time missionary. <br />
</div>
I hope everyone is doing well, I know that there are some
health problems, an unsold house, and such, but I am prying for you all
and I love you. Remember, that all trials are for our profit and
learning.<br /><br />
</div>
Hope you have a great week. Love you, bye!Jannickehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10161806142320244740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3534080976063879835.post-66542157196775575052014-03-31T21:21:00.000-07:002014-04-08T21:26:37.444-07:00Weekly Email - March 31stWe found out that in Białystok there is the same
naleśnikarnia (Polish Pancake house) that existed in Szczecin. I love
that place, it has great Swedish pancakes. There is also a burger place
here called quicker burger with the best burgers in all of Europe, I kid
you not. They have absolutely massive burgers cooked to perfection and
piled with toppings for under 20zł The bacon burger (about twice as big
as any I had in the states is amazing. So that is what it is like on the
food front.<br />
<br />
We were also able to go to the free zoo here and feed the
piggies. I will have to get you some pictures and videos of that
sometime. They are so funny. I think the Poles get a bigger kick out of
the Americans messing with animals than from the animals themselves.<br />
<br />
On the missionary front, we have been able to drop off a Book
of Mormon in English to an awesome man named P who speaks flawless
English. Our other investigator, T, was unable to make it to church which
was a real bummer, but I still have high hope for him. I am excited to see what the week brings.<br />

president up there. Transfers are on Wednesday, but I may not be leaving
Warsaw until Thursday. I will be with Elder S who is already
there.<br />
<br />
(Note from Mom: I might just have mentioned that I wasn't keen on Bialystok before he left for his mission. It has to do with history. My bad!) <br />
<br />
**********<br />
<br />
<div>
This week was a complete blur to me. I know that on Tuesday we took
a culture night at the Polish National Soccer Stadium where they have
set up an ice skating rink in the middle for the winter... Yes, we ice
skated in the national stadium. That was a treat getting to be in the
center of Polish soccer and pride and doing something fun. I only fell
once ha, ha, but I did develop a mean blister on my right food... Dang
flat feet. We also went out and got "Mexican food" at burrito boys...
One word 'DON'T'</div>
On the missionary work front, things were slow. We had some
potential investigators set up appointments and then fall through. We have been on a constant hunt for 2
months with no real footing.<br />
<br />
I am
excited to go serve in Białystok as branch president, it is a little
nerve-racking, but I think I will pull through. I am currently the living mission record holder for most
cities served in at 7. I am the nomad of the mission and have seen every
corner of the blessed country that is Poland and so it shall be until I
leave. I have tracted many a building in this land and talked to many a
Pole from Szczecin to Katowice to Białystock to Wrocław. Let it be
known that I have hugged the gnomes of Wrocław, sailed the boat of Łódź,
and skated the ice of Warsaw in just 2 short years and now I will get
to see the largest Russian Orthodox church in Poland in just a few days.
My shoes have stepped on many a Krakowian cobblestone and many a

<div>
This week was good. We were able to teach some really good
street lessons, and get some new investigators as well. These people
were really cool, and we had lesson at one man's house whom I met on the
street on Wednesday. When I got to his apartment, he had invited some
friends over that were part of a Christian alliance group
(non-denominational Christians). They got a little bible bashy, but
nothing I couldn't handle. I ended up just telling them that the only way they were ever
going to find the answers they were seeking was by reading the Book of
Mormon and asking God if it was true. He was just so sure that it could
not be true because the bible is complete, but he had never given it a
chance. It is
too hard to leave your comfort zone for the next step.<br />
</div>
Other than that, I also had a great exchange with Elder W in
Bemowo. We even made it to Adam's ties for lunch! We got some free
matching "exchange ties" out of the defect box and so all is well that
ends well. We tried to get some pictures for the parents as well ;)<br />
</div>
I got to see some friends from Wrocław yesterday after church
who were in town for a mini MTC and got stuck here for the day after
missing a train. It was overall a good time and a good week.<br />

<div>
Hi all, </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
This week was good. I made it up to
Białystok on exchange with Elder S. It was definitely a city
with a more "Eastern block influence". We had a
good time though and got to teach one of their three members with
another of the three present. Elder S had the best idea ever,
after his camera broke, he just went and bought a new ipod touch and has
a Polish dictionary, the gospel library, and a camera at his instant
disposal. He was using it up a storm and it made me think "why don't
they issue these to all missionaries?" Then I thought "oh, they do... in
the states." But I thought it was genius. I saw D and K in
the Warsaw train station on my way to Białystok. <br />
</div>
The rest of the week was a blur. I got back with Elder
W and we did our normal work. I am really still missing Elder
K and Wrocław. I feel a little resentment that I was ripped out of
such a good thing in only 2 months. I felt as though I had no chance of
leaving since there was a new area opening in Wrocław and I was coming
into the final leg. I know the Lord has his own plans that I need to
trust, but dang!</div>
</div>
Hey, I know I said my release date is the <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1264214326" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">17th of June</span></span>,
but it may be changed to the 19th in light of some recent events
(Uchtdorf is doing a mission conference here and will be in the mission
home from the 16-19th I think). President does our exit events in the
mission home so his current idea is to postpone us 2 days and then do it
and just put us in 3-somes. Elder Baranowski's dad is still coming the
17th and President plans on releasing Baranowski to the stake president
(under the care of his dad) on the 17th and he will just stick around
Warsaw with his dad or something... So, that is that. <br />
</div>
I have really been trying to get more pictures (especially
after seeing how much use Elder S' ipod got) so I hope to get
a lot more.<br /></div>
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HAILEY AND ERIK, MAKE IT A GOOD ONE!!!<br />
</div>
Love you all, I am going to send my recording and pictures.<br />

Hejka,<br /></div>
So things went well this week I am
low on time so this will be quick. We haven't had anything crazy happen,
I think the culminating highligh of the week was my interview with
President Edgren, he really helped put things into perspective for me.
He asked me a lot of questions that made me realize just how much he
cares about and worries about the missionaries here. I realized that I
have been trying to improve my mission and myself from the inside out,
focusing on myself too much. I realized after talking with President
that we develop the most when we reach out to help others. It was just
something I picked up from some of his questions that he had about the
missionaries in my district. We haven't had any crazy new experiences,
no new investigators to report, but we search everyday. We generally
tract when it gets down to -15 celsius, so that isn't really a problem. I
don't think they make "gear" that is meant to survive that temperature
for very long, but there are always places to go to warm up, so we are
surviving. I have discovered the magic of mittens. Best purchase I ever
made on my mission... Why would anyone ever wear gloves is the true
question.<br />
</div>
I am having a good time. My companion is doing good, we are
doing good on hand warmers (we found a stash from a previous missionary
and we have re-usable boil ones). All is well in the hood. We are having
a good time and I am learning a lot from being a leader here in Warsaw.
I realize it still is not my favorite scenario, but I am learning from
being here, so I can't complain too much. I wouldn't mind a nice last
transfer away from here though. I am tied for the most cities served in
in the mission right now (six) my running mate is Elder S. I am
hoping for a 7th, Gdańsk here I come! President let it slip that he may
be transfering Elder K out of Wrocław soon and he also asked me what a
good situation for Elder W next transfer would be, so I think I
may be doomed to stay as W heads out.<br />
</div>
Well, time is about up. I love you all. I will talk at you again in a week. Żyjcie długo, i rozwijajcie się.<br />

<div>
<div>
<div>
<div>
So, I have sent a pretty detailed
recording this week. I have made a few speech goals recently that I am
working on. I am trying to develope more "fluency and character" in my
speech. I am also trying to eliminate the word "like" from
innappropriate uses, which has unfortunately led to the development of
an "um" from time to time, so that has to go as well. I think that the
recording process really helps with that though. I want to have a more
professional and interesting speech pattern, so wish me luck on that
one.<br />
</div>
This week went really well all things considered. The
temperature here in Warsaw dropped to -5 celcius and snowed, and rained,
and partly melted into mud, and snowed again, and froze, and snowed
again and then smacked us in the face with a nice bitter wind... I hear
in Wrocław it is still +5. but I am not there anymore... I got the
pleasure of talking with President Edgren this week over the phone after
we called a really interesting former investigator named P.
P is British and a PhD and did extensive 4 year studies on the
ethographics of Mormons in Poland. He had a lot of very interesting
insights. We got into a good
discussion so we talked for a while. He began talking about
how much of a change the change in mission presidents made in the church
in Poland, he compared the different mission presidents and their affect on the church. He was interested to hear that there was a new
boss in town and he asked me how he was and if he would like him. I told
him that I think he would like him a lot and he would have to come by
and meet him. He said he would love to, so I then had to call president
and ask when he would be in Warsaw for sacrament meeting. He said in 2
weeks, and I was happy with that. Long story short, P is coming to church on February 2nd
and he is a really cool guy (I enjoy the intellectual conversations). There was also a lesson with J, from Africa. We invited
Brother G to be on the lesson. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Well, it is an interesting time to be a Poland Warsaw
missionary. Things in this mission have changed, there is a new attitude
across the mission, and I think it is really good. As president Edgren
says "obedience is to be expected as a minimum, we are beyond that, we
are a mission of faith and purification." He is a great guy and I really
enjoy his presence and Christ-like leadership. He is really personable
as well and understands human weaknesses but expects improvement.<br />
</div>
I am planning a district meeting for tomorrow that I hope will
be good and well received by the district. I have been really focusing
on chapter 6 of PMG (Christlike attributes) and I have a personal one I
am working on extensively, Elder W and I have a companionship
attribute, and I want to set a district attribute, but it is going to
take everyone's participation, so we will see how it goes over. I have
come to realize with the type of mission we have here, that helping
other missionaries can be just as rewarding and effective as helping any
other person we come in contact with. Missionaries really need a lot of
support (especially here) and in the field, all we really have is each
other, so it is a fun time.<br />
</div>
I hope all is going well at home and that you get the house sold off soon, I am praying for you all.<br /></div>
Love,</div>

<div>
<div>
Hello all, </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I am safe and sound in the beautiful
little village of Warsaw. The trees are green and the pigeons are
singing. The bus fumes are absolutely invigorating and the emailing is
only a dollar an hour. All in all, it is pretty nice. Well, the district
is indeed comprised of just about all of my former
companions and friends. Elder W is pretty great. <br />
</div>
MOM: His full name is ..... W. He is from Idaho
Falls and does indeed like potatoes. He is very book smart, he studies
hard and it shows in his Polish. He is pretty cool and already able to handle
himself. This is my second comp from Idaho (J and W). <br />
</div>
I have already made it to Adam's ties, it was pretty great.
They are really nice ties, not "the only" good ties in the world, but they are nice. I
bought 5 today and got 6 "skazy" ties for free (ties with small
deffects). I am planning on buying about 5 more for me and you should
place any orders if you want any, we probably won't be back there for
another 5 weeks or so.<br />
</div>
We are teaching two investigators, both over the age of 65. Warsawians are pretty kind. The
weather is getting cold and rainy (soon to be snowy) so I am not
thrilled about that. I am already layering a lot. Hopefully it won't go
too far past February and we can get some spring action going on in
March and all will be well in our neck of the woods. As for now, the sun
is still out most of the time, so it is not the dark grey gloom of
years passed. <br />
</div>
Our area is nice with many nice parks. Shopping for
groceries is our only real inconvenience, our grocery stores are about
the most expensive ones in Poland. Our apartment is fairly small but
really nice. It is very clean and new compared to my last place. We even
have an induction stovetop that boils water in like 1 and a half
minutes. <br />
</div>
<div>
Well, I have to send my recording that has an actuall
account of my life. I think this has a pretty accurate account of my
current real-time circumstances. <br /></div>
P.S. I can't believe Spencer is back already, he looks exactly the same.<br />

<br />
So first thing is first. I am getting transferred. I am going to Warsaw and
will be companions with Elder W (Elder K's MTC companion). I am District Leader over Warsaw I. I was really hoping to stay in Wroclaw for
at least the next 4 months, and I never had a desire to make it to Warsaw, I prefer the smaller towns. <br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
The rest of the week was prettty normal. We got to teach
this really cool guy named M, whom the sisters found for us. He is
really philosophical. He speaks English very well, and he is really
nice and very well read in a lot of philosophy. I think he would really
like hanging out with Ramsey at the University. T joined us on the
lesson and she did amazing sharing personal experiences and such, she
is a great recent convert and we are glad to have her. We also tracted
into a woman by the name of E who could not let us inside because she
had guests who were sleeping, but she listened to a really quick message
outside her door and then promised to read the Book of Mormon. She
seemed really cool and really sincere. That was one of the tender
mercies of the week.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Well, I will leave off here and try to get my
recording to you (it is very short this week, sorry), I love you all
though and hope you have a great weekJannickehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10161806142320244740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3534080976063879835.post-43766129399817701122013-12-30T20:50:00.000-08:002014-02-05T20:50:27.259-08:00Weekly Email - December 30th<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So, not much is new since we last spoke. We have all
gotten over our various illnesses. I feel a lot better and only have a
little bit of excess mucus right now. The stomach bug finally passed over
and we are all back to the old grind. This week will be a normal week
again except for New Years Eve we go inside at <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1264214300" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">6:00</span></span>
for safety. <br />
</div>
I have been setting some goals for the New Year, and my 6
month left goals as well. I am trying not to go overkill, because when I
set too many goals (even if they are all good and achievable), I end up
doing none of them. I already need to readjust from my original 6 month
goal ideas. It is a good process though. President Edgren also
challenged us to take one Christ-like attribute from PMG chapter 6 to
focus on and to "make it our own". I thought it was a great goal, I will
probably do one every month, since I feel like one a week is too fast
to really develop a trait like that. I guess I am just trying to really
refrain from trying to take on the world and hitting a brick wall.<br />
</div>
My comp and I are doing great. We are trying to figure out
what is going to happen at transfers, but we can't decide. The general
consensus seems to be either we both stay, or Elder K leaves and I
stay. I don't know if that is really how it is going to go down, but we
shall see. President Edgren has done a very good job at being
completely unpredictable since he came in. I kinda like it, it keeps us on our toes.<br />
</div>
I don't really have a lot more to say, I feel like I have been
rambling, I will try to gather some more pictures to send. Love you
all, I will talk to you again in a week. Bye</div>

As it turned out the four of them were sick for Christmas. So they spent the day at the chapel e-mailing and calling their families. Here are some of the pictures from the days leading up to Christmas.<br />

Well, you already all know what happened all the way to Wednesday.
From that point, most of the week was busy preparing a baptism for T.
She is an investigator that the sisters have been teaching. I was
fortunate enough to get to interview her for baptism which is in and of
itself a neat experience. She was just super prepared and had a solid
testimony so she passed with flying colors. She was baptized on Saturday
and Confirmed a member of the church on Sunday by President C. That was
certainly the highlight of the week without a doubt. The rest of the
week has actually been a bit slower than usual, we are going to really
pick up the pace this week and find some new people to teach. Finding
for me is always such a daunting task, I feel confident in everything
else besides finding, but as Preach My Gospel says "Nothing happens in
missionary work until you find someone to teach". So I have to get
working on that.<br />
</div>
Elder K and I are doing great, I think we have plans today to
go shopping around some used clothing stores in Wrocław to see what kind
of treasures we can find. We are working well together though and he is
still amazing at what he does.<br />
<br />
Love<br />

Hey, so this week was pretty good. Sorry, I am a little
crunched for time since we are doing this on lunch break, but I wanted
to just say I am doing great and my comp is as well. Elder Caskey says
hi to everyone and he is doing well. </div>
We had a great time touring Auschwitz with the whole zone.
Unfortunately President didn't make it, but he came to Katowice to watch
and join our carroling and finding activity. It was a blast, we just
sung our Christmas songs and when someone would stop nearby, a
missionary could split off and go talk to them. We got a lot of people's
contact and a lot of people stopped. I got to spend some quality time
with Elder Caskey and even contact with him for a few minutes. I think
we would make great companions personally. His companion, Elder
A, is great. His dad is in the military and has been stationed in
Arizona for some time, he says it is his favorite place in the world.
He loves his guns, so we got some quality time too. </div>
We had zone training and that was a wonderfully spiritual
meeting about how to feel the spirit and how to help investigators
recognize the spirit. Then we had a testimony meeting, I love missionary
testimony meetings. I think one of the greatest blessings of my mission
is I have pretty much gotten over my fear of public speaking. I still
have a lot of public speaking skills to develope, but the imediate fear
is gone. I feel like it is such an amazing oportunity and a great
teaching and learning experience to get together as missionaries and
share testimonies. We had a safe trip back and are now home in Wroclaw. I
am going to have to cut this short. I hope everyone is doing great and
that you have a great week.<br />
<br />
Love you all,<br />

For one, Jarmarki
opened up, this is like a little Christmas village in the town square,
and I suppose that Wrocław probably has the best in the world, so I am
lucky to be here at this time. We have been a couple of times, there is
even a little roller coaster in the middle, we are gonna have to give
that a ride. We have been working with some cool investigators, and we
have been meeting cool people.<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
On Monday we went out to explore some of the many malls
in our city, it appears that Wrocław is a city of malls, there are about
9 that I have counted out on the map, and that doesn't include some
very large indoor "bazars" that are basically malls with no named
stores. So we wanted to go mall hopping a bit, but we only got to two of
them We are going to see one more today and then go to the Christmas
village again, I have a feeling we will be spending a lot of time there.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There have been quite a few investigators coming
from english, unfortunately, we are having a hard time getting them to
really want to do anything. They are fine with hearing about our church
and learning about Mormons. We are teaching a
really cool guy "J" who is just awesome. About 50 years old, he has a
wife and three teenage/adult kids. J has been ready for baptism for
quite some time. He knows the church is true, he has a testimony, he
just needs a little more family support. His wife is actually quite
supportive and really likes the church, she just doesn't feel like she
needs to join it right now, she said J could get baptized though. I
think it is just hard for him, he feels like it would split up the
family. Talking with Sister B in our district, I asked what she would do
with J if she were teaching him, she said "Well, we have a sort of
'motto' right? It goes 'Find, Teach, Baptize, Keep', sometimes I think
that we need to 'find, teach, and keep for a little while' before they
are ready". So we are at that cross roads. I really respect J for how
far he has come, and how strong his faith is, and I really like the guy.
He also feeds us and loves having gospel discussions at his place, so I
feel like we are really good friends. The other day, on a tram on the
way home from his house, he was riding with us, and he told me some of
the difficulties his son was going through, and then asked what he can
do to help his son. Imagine that, a 50 year old father of 3 asking for
parenting advice from a 20 year old missionary... I felt honored, but he
is a great guy. He came to church and said he invited his wife, but she
is tired from some post-cancer treatment she is on and she couldn't
make it. I hope and pray that something changes for him. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We are also hoping that some of our other
investigators from English start making some real progress and at least
giving the church a shot. We had one girl in our english class a couple
of weeks ago who quietly came up after class and asked if she could take
a Book of Mormon to read and keep. I told her of course and she didn't
show up after that. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Everything is going great here though, my companion
is awesome. You would never know he was a trainee, he speaks magnificent
Polish, no joke. He is a great guy too, we have really compatible
senses of humor, so we are liking serving together. Our members here are
doing great, we have been trying to get investigators so that we can
have members sit in on lessons and help us teach, because it is always
good for them to get an opportunity like that. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We had the opportunity of teaching the Priesthood
lesson this week in church, luckily we got to just do it off of a talk
by President Uchtdorf, titled 'Come, Join with Us'. We read and
discussed many of his points. I love the beginning little story where he
describes all of the responsibilities and unpaid obligations of being a
member of the church and then someone asks "Why would anyone want to
join such a church" he replies with "I thought you would never ask",
then he goes on to say all of the great things he has learned. I feel
like that same thing could be said when looking at my mission "Why would
anyone want to serve such a mission?". But it is probably the most
rewarding experience of my life so far. I love the people here, I love
the gospel, and I am learning so much about my relationship with God
while helping others to develope theirs.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I hope everything is going well for everyone back at
home, I love you all, hope you have a great week, and I will email you
again in a week.</div>

The week has been great. We have had some wonderful teaching
opportunities with a couple of really cool investigators. One kid, M,
who is 18 is doing great and I think will shortly be preparing for
baptism.<br />
<br />The really cool experience we had was with a former investigator
named J. This man is a family guy, with a wife, two sons, and a
daughter. All of his kids are around our age, but he acknowledges that
we are teachers of the Lord's gospel. He is a really nice guy, he
treated us to some food and tea and we sat down and all he wanted to do
was talk about his family and the gospel. Unfortunately, his family is
not interested as he is, but he is not down about that. He has been
prepared for baptism before and had multiple baptismal dates and has
backed out each time or postponed until he backed out. This time, we
went in with a planned lesson on reading, praying, and going to church.
He hadn't been taught in a little while, so we thought it would be good
to do the basic three. When we got to talking to him, I felt like that
was completely uneccessary. He shared with me a scripture he had read
lately in the Book of Mormon, and how much it had meant to him, I asked
if he prays and he said everyday. I asked if he has been out to church
in a while, he said it had been a couple of weeks, but he was going the
next day. I then felt like we needed a new lesson. For a second I had
gotten nervous about what to teach him. Then a scripture came to mind in 3 Nephi 18. I went with
that thought and turned there and shared a scripture on baptism and
church, and made a connection in that scripture with the Holy Ghost.
Then it hit me, he always backed out of baptism... Why? Well certainly
there was some underlying fear or some sort of misunderstanding. I
thought, if he could just understand what a blessing it was, and how
great it would be to have that Holy Ghost all the time, what fear could
he possibly have. I think sometimes missionaries make baptism out to be a
bigger thing than it should be, while being essential, your
circumstances in life do not immediately change as a result of baptism.
The floor doesn't fall out from under you, birds won't come down and
attack you, nor will you happen upon a million dollars and a chocolate
bar down the street from your baptism... But.... You will have the gift
of the Holy Ghost. I turned us in the scriptures to The Acts chapter 2. I
love the story of the day of Pentacost. In the MTC, Brother Stice told
us to have BOM heros to rely on when you have nothing else. I took that
advice and added some bible heros and stories. Peter on the Day of
Pentacost is my "go-to guy". We read how he was given the gift of the
Holy Ghost with all the Apostles, they received the gift of tongues, and
then Peter describes yet other gifts of the spirit "Your young mens
will have visions, and your old men will dream dreams". So on and So
forth. Then I testified of the power of that gift, I told him I would
not be here in a state to testify to you in Polish without the help that
the Lord provides. I then mentioned the ability he had to feel the
Spirit right then, I told him that I knew he could feel the Spirit, but
he could have that as a constant companion after baptism. I told him of
the story of Peter's testimony of the divinity of Christ. That Christ
asked his disciples "Who say ye that I am?" and Simon Peter responded
"Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God". Christ praised him for
that response because he knew this from the Holy Ghost even before that
gift had been bestowed upon him. It was a powerful lesson, and then J
agreed that in our next appointment, we could set a baptismal date. We
are excited for that, we were very straightforward and open with him and
he was very open in return, I strongly feel that he is ready for
batism, he just needs to make the decision to do it.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The rest of the week was also great, our members are
awesome, they
bring such a great spirit to the meetings and they are such good
fellowshippers. We have some really good relationships here already and
it will only get better. The city is beautiful, and it is getting
decorated for Christmas especially in town square. They are bringing out
the little market houses where they sell all sorts of fun trinkets, and
we are excited for when they open up. So we are having a great time.
Elder K is the man, we are getting along great and his Polish is
amazing for 3 weeks in Poland. He came with some great communicaion
skills.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Wish I had time to tell you more, but we have been rushed today, I love you all and hope everyone has a great week.</div>

goodbye to all of my friends in Katowice, and I will really miss them,
but we will be in contact. But the rest was great. We had some good
lessons before I left Katowice with some American girls that are
baptists and are here to teach pre-school. They had some really
interesting views on life. It was nice to see the different prospective
and to have my testimony grow on how important and amazing the
Restoration was. So much information had been lost and changed, and now
we have it again, I am grateful for that.<br />
<br />
Then, on Wednesday, I got on a train to go to Warsaw and pick
up my trainee before hitting the streets in the scenic city of Wroclaw. I
got in to Warsaw to be greeted by the famous Elder H who was also
training. Shortly after, Elder R, Elder K, and Elder
S joined the training elders. Then the sisters, W, B,
and H. We got to spend an hour or two around town getting food
and such before we got to the mission home (a place I haven't been in
since I was a new Elder in the mission over a year ago). Then we got a
pep-talk/trainer meeting with president. I love President Edgren, he had
us start and end all of our meetings with music and luckily we had some
musically talented sisters who played the violin and piano for us.
Then, the trainees came in. I went with a bit of advice that Elder
L gave me. He said not to look around and think about which trainee
I want, or which I don't want... Just don't judge them. So I didn't,
but the meeting got started right away with our trainees and I was the
first Elder to get my trainee. President had me stand up and point out
my city on the map, and he called up Elder K to be my companion.
Elder K is great. He is an American, but grew up most of his life
in Switzerland and Belgium. His dad is a commodities trader there. We
got a lot of time to talk and get to know each other on our 8 hour train
ride from Warsaw to Wroclaw the next day. He has two older sisters, one
younger. His family has now been moved to Utah. He is fresh out of high school like all new Elders. He is the great-grandson of Spencer W.
Kimball. He did track in high
school and is crazy good at Polish for being a greenie. I mean, he just
gets the language structure. The flow will come with time of course, but
his grammar and vocab are superb.<br />
<br />
We got into Wroclaw and our sisters picked us up from the
station and told us we had an appointment in 45 minutes. So there was no
time to settle in, we got going straight to the appointment after
dropping off our bags. We had a private English lesson with three guys
and we had nothing planned so I went with emergency plan X where we sit
them down and have them create a personalized language study plan. They
seemed to really enjoy it overall.<br />
<br />
The next day we had an appointment with our investigator M. He
is a cool kid, and he is really searching. O (a member) helped us on
that lesson. She is the person Sister Stay was pretending to be in the
MTC when we taught our "fake investigators".<br />
<br />
I think the best part of the week though was just going to
church. We have some amazing members here, it is a very bilingual
branch. There are some youth and some primary (the primary kids weren't
there yesterday though). They were just great.<br />
<br />
The city here is gorgeous, built in a sort of delta of the
river Odra or something like that. The architecture is wonderful, and
there are some really quirky things, like the gnomes that are all over
the city. It is hard to describe, but you should look up krasnale we
wroclawiu or just wroclaw gnomes. They are pretty neat. I unfortunately
have been too busy to take pictures, but next week I will get some for
you all.<br />
<br />
I think I am going to really enjoy my time here in Wroclaw and
I am looking forward to really getting to work with Elder K.<br />

This week has been kinda wacky. Firstly, we found out on
Thursday that Elder W was leaving Katowice early to become the next
AP with Elder N (third time companions). He found out on Tuesday
and they were being fishy, so we inquired and they coulddn't lie. Before
that, the week is kind of a fog. We met with some people that had set
up an appointment with us. That was our only
lesson of the week. But we kept going until it came time to start our 3-some
with Elder L in Katowice. I do remember that on Friday, we had a
culture night in Katowice and got to watch as Poles celebrated Day of
the Dead. They go throughout the week and clean the graves of their
loved ones and ancestors and on November 1st (and the days surrounding
it depending on how devout they are) they go and place candles and
flowers all over the graves and the graveyards. It is really quite
spectacular. I was in Lodz one year ago celebrating this same holiday in
the snow, this year there has been no snow yet, so we are blessed. <br />
</div>
On Saturday we rode on a train early in the morning to see
Elder W off and get with Elder L. W was very excited and
then our adventures began. We had a lesson that day with the other
elders investigator who is preparing to be baptized this month. He is
really a special kid and has a lot of potential in the years to come. He
is 17 years old, but is really searching and really has a lot of faith.
We all have high hopes for him and we had a really spiritual meeting
where we watched the Restoration video and then testified about the
power of the Restoration and how amazing it is that God and Jesus Christ
have spoken to men in our day and that we can all have that personal
witness in this life. He was really receptive and has been taught
everything he needs to know before he gets baptized on the 23rd of this
month.<br />
</div>
We also went out to do a service project in a place called
Mysłowice. It is a little town covered in graffiti, but on the outskirts, there is a little place covered in
plots of land called "działki" I don't know the english equivalent in
the states, because we have no such thing. It is a large "garden" with a
little (tiny) house on it where Poles go to get away from the cares of
life. The Sisters are teaching a woman with a Działka in Mysłowice and
she asked if we could help her paint it. When we got there, the paint
she had bought was very strange. It was thin and watery and more like elmers
glue, but if you got some on your hand and rubbed it between your
fingers, it would just disappear like magic. I spilt some on my hoody
and I wiped it right off. <br />
</div>
Yesterday we had a good church meeting. That night, we got our transfer calls. I am going to
be training! I will also be DL in Wrocław which should be beautiful for
the winter. I am super excited, so on Wednesday I ride into Warsaw to
pick up my trainee and Thursday, I go to Wrocław with him. I am stoked,
and the sisters in my district are really cool as well. I have worked
with one of them before way back in Łódź. The Senior couple is going to
be the Lloyds as well (from my second Lodz transfer) so that should be
very exciting, everyone loves the Lloyds. I am excited to see what the
new transfer brings and I am looking for ways to grow as a missionary
and a person, I am probably going to do something that a few
missionaries around the mission have done called a "40 day fast" where
you start with a literal 1 day fast and then you make a list of a few
specific things you can eliminate from your life (or add) and for the
next 40 days you eliminate (or add) those things from your life. It is
an idea I had originally heard from Elder W, but Elder L
and W both did it this past transfer as well. I am probably going
to give it a shot. I am also excited for the oportunity to train. It
should be a lot of fun.<br />
<br />
Love you all,<br />

Hi Family, </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
This week we saw some great miracles. I wanted to start by telling
you of the biggest one that I saw. Saturday night marks probably one of
the greatest (if not the greatest) nights of my mission so far. We were
working all week, all day, and now it was after dinner and we were going
out again to try to find those who had been prepared. At about 18:15
not far from our house, Elder B stopped a girl and began teaching
her the restoration. I could see that he was doing a great job and she
was being very patient in listening to him and so I just stood by and
listened. She was listening pretty intently and every once in a while,
Elder B would ask me for a word or phrase and I would help him out.
Once we had pretty much gotten through the points of a first lesson, she
looked at me and asked if I spoke really good Polish. I said that I
could hold a conversation. She then asked to both of us "What is it that
the restoration has given you personally?". I wasn't sure at first how
to answer, but I figured I would just go with the spirit. I told her for
me it brought a knowledge of what God expects from me. I know where I
came from, what I am supposed to do and where I am going. I told her
that this is called the Plan of Salvation. She said I was being too
general, she asked what that meant specifically because every religion
has some theory on what our purpose is. Honestly I did not feel very
prepared to give a lesson about the Plan of Salvation at that point, I
told her that we could spend hours talking about that and that we would
love to set up with her and talk to her at some point on that topic. She
then asked if we would have just 30 minutes to talk right then because
she is really busy, but had just gotten off work and has the whole
afternoon. We said of course and we went and sat on a nearby bench.
Elder B explained some things about the Plan of Salvation we
explained that the goal in this life is to live worthy and to take upon
us the ordinances that are necessary to return to live with God. She
found that to be very interesting. We got into a detailed discussion of
Who God is and how we can come to know Him. She had always had faith in a
higher power but it seemed that she mostly believed He was just that, a
power. I asked if God had a body, according to her. She said "well...
No, I believe He came down as Christ and that he died and is more of a
governing force". She said He had a will and a "mind" like a perfected
man, but she didn't imagine that he had a tangible body. I was able to
testify that this truth was restored with the rest of the restoration.
We talked about the Holy Ghost. She said she has always had a hard time
gaining faith in any solid points of doctrine. She believes in God, but
cannot easily gain a testimony in things like the restoration or the
Book of Mormon, or even the Koran, or other religions that she has
looked into. I told her that only the Spirit could bring that testimony
to her and only after earnest seeking. I felt like I could very
personally relate. My whole life has been a struggle for faith. It is
not something that comes easily to me, it is something I had to work
very hard for and continue to work very hard for. I have always had
desire, but I am naturally a doubter and a skeptic. I testified that if
the Holy Ghost brought me this testimony, He would do the same for her.
We had a wonderful discussion, and we set up to meet with her again this
week. For me it was one of those moments where I could feel the Spirit
work through me, I wasn't teaching the lesson, I was just carrying the
words of God. It began to flow much more smoothly, less mechanical in
presentation. I have only had a few such instances on my mission, but it
is those experiences that I value the most about this work.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The rest of the week, we saw a lot of work with little
visible fruit, but a lot of spiritual rewards. I had some particularly
rough days where people were just more mean than usual. One day we went
out and tried to talk to every person we saw and they did not just deny
us, they completely ignored us. One person after the other. We would
walk up adn just say "Hey, good day..." and they would walk by eyes
straight ahead as if we didn't exist. It became almost comical like they
had planned it. That was a rough day and A LOT of walking, but I feel
like I learned a lot. I learned a lot about dilligence in the face of
all opposition and relying on the Spirit to do the talking, not your
mouth. It was a good week, we worked hard, we got a couple of really
good conversations and we are looking forward to meeting with some of
these people again.</div>
<div>
</div>
Sunday we had District Conference. All of the members,
missionaries, and investigators who could gathered in from Kraków,
Wrocław, Kielce, and Katowice into our chapel. I got to see a lot of old
faces like President K from Kraków, and the O's the nice
American/British family who had us over for Christmas and their two
children. The meeting went great and President Edgren gave his talk in
wonderful Polish which the poles are always very happy about. The chapel
was filled and it was wonderful to see little kids running around and
people talking and having a great time. Then the Elders from Kraków (S
and Z) had a few hours till their bus. We toured them around Katowice
and they had the recent convert L with them who I taught when I was in
Kraków and I had not even heard that he was getting baptized! It was a
good day all in all to finish off a good week.<br />
<br />
Love you all,<br />

In his recording he shared that they have had a good week. Work is still slow, but Elder B and Elder Godwin are in good spirits. They are enjoying working together. They are enjoying the people they have met in the branch. He sent us some pictures around Sosnowiec.<br />

This week was a good growing experience for me. It was spent trying
our hardest to find new investigators to teach while seeing very little
success. Here in Sosnowiec right now, we don't
have a teaching pool which has been rough, but such is life sometimes. I
am at the point in my mission where I have come to the understanding
that you can put in 110% and the Lord may still try testing you further.
I always look back to my favorite story in the Book of Mormon of Nephi
and Lehi, the brothers in Helaman and their years of preaching. Not to
say that I have seen no success, or do not plan on having success, but
they were blessed for their tireless efforts. Nephi was specifically
blessed for his determination and endurance in preaching the word to a
hardened people. I hope to learn the lessons the Lord sent me here to
learn and to receive similar blessings.<br />
<br />
This week we had a few good experiences. On night we were walking
down a long road which we had planned to be on, and a fog had rolled in,
and there were just not many people on the road. From a distance I saw a
little figure emerging from the fog. I turned to Elder B and said
"If it is an adult, she is going to stop and talk to us.... If it is a
child, forget I said that". As she approached, we saw that it was indeed
a really short adult. Elder B began talking to her and introduced
us and our message. We testified and told her about the Book of Mormon
and how much it meant to us. She was really open to the idea and wanted
to read it. Later we tried to get her contact information, and
unfortunately she only gave us her email address, but regardless, the
Spirit was felt and she has our information.<br />
<br />
Another story from the week was from a man named M. We stopped
and talked to him just yesterday on the street. He had heard the name
'Mormon' before but had no idea what we were all about. I felt impressed
to give him a really shortened overview, I don't know why, but I just
told him that after a long time of absence, God restored the Gospel of
Jesus Christ through a prophet. The proof of it is in the Book of
Mormon. Immediately he said he would love to read and pray about such a
book. He led on a conversation from there and asked more about us
personally, why we decided to serve such a mission, what we were doing
in Poland, the usual questions, but I felt a real spark when we talked
about the restoration even though it was very brief, I felt that that
was just what he needed to hear. After we had talked a little while
longer, we asked if we could exchange numbers and be in contact. He said
sure, but that after 2-3 days his number wouldn't work because he would
be out of the country in Germany. I asked when he would return. He told
me 2-3 years probably. I was a little disappointed, I am not going to
lie, but I told him about the church website and that if he is
interested he can go and find missionaries and a church in Germany and
that I would really invite him to do so. He seemed really intrigued by
the idea that we were all around the world doing this kind of work. I
probably will never be sure of what happens to him, but it just felt
like the right place at the right time.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We also met a really nice girl named D from
Belaruse or however you spell it. She spoke Russian, Belarussian,
Polish, English, and Spanish and is studying here. She was protestant
and really open to different ideas. We talked to her in English because I
think it was stronger for her than Polish (although I am not sure about
that... Her Polish was definitely stronger than mine). We taught her
everything about the restoration of the gospel except about the Book of
Mormon because she had to go. Unfortunately we didn't get to set up to
meet her and talk to her again, so we will just have to leave it up to
her if she wants to learn more.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
All in all, I feel satisfied with the week, it wasn't
easy, it wasn't exceptionally fruitful, but I feel like I am learning a
lot.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I did love the Peanut butter M&M's I had
to share them with the district during conference, but I got my fair
share. I think original beef jerkey flavor is my favorite.</div>
<div>
</div>
Have a good Holiday week,
I love you all.<br />

While serving as Mission President in Poland President & Sister Nielson would cut off a piece of each missionaries tie or for the sisters another piece of clothing. They were collecting these pieces to make a missionary quilt. As they were getting ready to leave their own mission they traveled around and cut off a piece of each of the missionaries ties that were still serving in Poland. They wanted to make sure that their quilt would be represented by all the wonderful people they had got to serve with. This included some of the members in Poland that had worked closely with them.<br />
<br />
In addition to the dedication the Nielson's have already shown they actually to a picture of each square in their quilt and sent it to each of the people in a personal e-mail. We love the Nielson's for their dedication and kind service. We feel so blessed that our son has gotten to serve under 2 wonderful mission presidents and their wonderful wives. Each bringing their own strengths and insights to these callings. <br />

Hello, </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
So, this week was exciting, being General Conference and all. It
started on Monday and we went to the town called Pszczyna. There was a
palace there that was recommended by Rafał. The city was a good 45
minute train ride away from Katowice, so we left first thing after
studies and rode out there. The city was beautiful, clean, well kept.
The palace was amazing (no idea whose it is or why he was important, but
it was cool none-the-less). Then we of course had our emailing time cut
a little short because we were emailing last. We rode into Katowice at <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1735815751" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">16:00</span></span>.
We had FHE it went well, the other Elders had
prepared a lesson about covenants and how we can gain Eternal Life with
God. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Tuesday we had District Meeting which went really well.
I had assigned Elders L and W to present to us some tips on
talking to people because they are both very talented in this
departement. They set up some role-plays where we pretended to talk to
Polish people on buses, trams, on the street, etc. It all was really
good practice, and Elder L is quite a showman in general. Later
that day we had some good conversations with a couple of nice people.
One man started by telling me that I probably did not speak good enough
Polish to carry on a religious discussion with him. I told him I would
give it a shot. We had a really good talk, he was super nice and just
told me what he believed according to the Bible as he read it. I shared
our beliefs, he said he wasn't looking to change, he has strong faith in
what he believes and so we said good day to each other. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Wednesday we went to Czeladź looking for less-actives
and former investigators. There were none to be found that day. English
followed. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Thursday, all I remember right now is Institute, and it
was really good. We talked about the role of the Book of Mormon and
other scriptures in our lives.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Friday, we went to
Tychy, a nice city not far from Pszczyna. The city was larger and
equally beautiful and clean and groomed. They were mowing lawns,
sweeping, etc. There was a less-active there who we visited. She was an
incredibly nice woman. She loved missionary
visits and hasn't seen missionaries for 4 years, so it was quite a
surprise. She said, however, that she has no need for going to church,
she loves the church and all it does, but it will do her no good if she
sees no need. That is all we could get out of her. We are going to giver
her information to our wonderful Sister missionaries and let them talk
with her.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Saturday, we had a lesson with K and talked about
faith and obedience and the blessings they bring. We got to see his new
little puppy (Laila gave birth to 4 puppies, but 3 didn't make it). They
haven't named the new guy yet, but they are gonna keep him.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Sunday we spent basically the whole day watching
conference which was wonderful. We saw every session but Priesthood and
Sunday afternoon. Elder Myler was in the family choir. The talks were
great, I did not see you guys nor did I know which session you went to.
After the session we watched in Polish, the branch council reached out
to us and called a meeting and asked how they can help us. We got some
good ideas in, and they are excited to expand member missionary work.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Love you all,</div>
<div>

Laila's puppy. If you know Brian you know that he has a love for animals that he inherited from his grandpas (both Lee and Tony). I know that he misses his own dog Roxie a lot so this is a sweet experience for him. If he could send us a pet home from Poland he would.<br />

<div>
Hello,</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
So this week was good. The work was really slow this week. Other
than being a little hit to my ego, I feel satisfied with our efforts,
and I feel like we did what the Lord would have us do. There was nothing
else that could have happened better because people have their free
agency. We worked on trying to find less actives a lot this week and we
finally got in contact with one young guy, we have a
meeting with him this week. We got to visit with an older woman who was a
former investigator. She said that she loves the Mormon missionaries
and has two "missionary sons" that call her their "Polish mother", but
she will never be a Mormon. She said that she used to cook for them
every Sunday but she will never cook for us because we can't replace her
sons. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We went to a new little city for less actives in our
area called Mysłowice, it is a neat place with cool graffiti. I will send
some pictures.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We were getting to the end of the
week, all our appointments had fallen through. We had talked with every
single person that crossed our path for a week and not one stopped for a
second to talk to us. We had only gotten that one lesson with the old
woman and that was it. We were pretty distraught and frantically looking
for anyone to listen to us on Sunday to get our last efforts in before
the week ended out. It was looking bleak, but then a woman actually
stopped for us. She was very nice, very open. She said she is open to
faith, but doesn't feel too firm right now. Her husband suddenly passed
away 3 months ago and she asked me where he was. I was able to relate
her story to Grandma and testify that they are still around, and that we
will get to live with them again. She set up a meeting to talk with us
again. It was a really good experience to end such a slow week.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Love you all,</div>
